Superstition

The word 'superstitio' was coined in ancient Rome to denote excessive fear of spirits or excessive propitiation of the deities (literally "a standing over", hence: "amazement, wonder, dread, especially of the divine or supernatural").  The ancient Greek pagans referred to it as deisidaimonia.

 

It was distinguished from 'pietas', which meant the proper observance of religious ritual.
