Symbols

Page history last edited by Yvonne 15 years ago

Pagan symbols represent the intertwining of life, spirituality, and nature.  They are positive and life-affirming.

Some Pagan and Heathen symbols have been appropriated by fascist groups.  Pagans and Heathens object strenuously to this misappropriation, as we want to live in a society that is safe for all groups to live in.  Pagans and Heathens are opposed to hate-mongering, racism, sexism, homophobia, fascism, neo-Nazism, and other ideologies that do violence to people.

Hexagram

The Hexagram (also known as the Star of David) symbolises the union of all four elements to make spirit; if you take it apart, you get the triangles of Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

The unicursal (Latin: single-line) hexagram was devised by the Golden Dawn, and later adapted by Aleister Crowley as a device of personal significance. It is often worn by Thelemites as a sign of religious identification and recognition. More

Heptagram

The seven-pointed star can symbolise the seven metals, the seven planets of classical astrology, the seven colours, etc. It is also known as the Elven star or Faery star (used by Otherkin, Faery Wicca, and Blue Star Wicca).

Venus (the Star of Ishtar) was symbolized by an eight-pointed star. It turns out there is a reason for the number eight. Venus experiences a cycle of approximately eight years. Venus is located at the same location with respect to the "fixed" stars every eight years. In this time, it has switched back and forth between morning and evening star five times.

Very direct symbolism in the signs for the sun and the moon and in several of the other symbols whose meaning is understood tempt a guess that the symbolism in the Star of Ishtar is in some way equally direct. Perhaps the number eight is itself symbolic, for Venus experiences an eight-year cycle. During that time it passes through its complete evening star/morning star/evening star pattern five times. This means that a configuration of Venus recurs on the same solar calendar date after eight years, which is how long five complete back-and-forth passes to either side of the sun take.
