Nick Hanks is currently working for English Heritage as the Territory Data Co-ordinator for the West. He has carried out historical research and archaeological surveying for The National Trust and English Nature, at many sites including Tyntesfield, Hardy's Cottage, and Dunster Castle.
He is an affiliated lecturer to the University of Bristol. He also gives talks and leads guided walks to groups and societies. His main work in this area is writing and performing guided walks at historic sites across the west country, and along the Thames Path and Ridgeway, as part of Longshanks & Talesman. They also wrote and recorded a radio series. He studied Archaeology at the University of Bristol and Drama at the University of Warwick. Between the two he worked as a music promoter.
He is director of an annual summer excavation of a deserted medieval village and an 18th century garden at Slaughterbridge in Cornwall. The excavation is now in its fourth year.
His research interests include:- Ritual practice, buildings and material culture (ancient and modern). Garden archaeology. Methods of historic data storage. Performance archaeology.
He has provided historical research for several feature films including Talos the Mummy, and The Lighthouse.
He lives near Bristol, and is married to author Yvonne Aburrow.
He is dyslexic.
