Why is Hypatia important?
She was one of the last Pagan philosophers and a scientist and mathematician, credited with the invention of the astrolabe and the hydrometer (though the evidence of this is scanty). She was a member of the neo-Platonist school. Accounts of her death state that she was butchered by a Christian mob, though the motive may have been political rather than religious. It is important to know that women could access the learning and teaching of philosophy in late antiquity. Unfortunately her writings are lost, but research has been carried out into her work.
