Environment

Page history last edited by PBworks 17 years ago

Pagans are very concerned about the environment, as we believe the Earth is sacred.

Some traditions regard the Earth as a Goddess, or as an embodiment of the divine feminine.

In addition to this, as Pagans believe that this life is more important than any possible afterlife, it seems like a logical next step to be concerned about the environment.

Some issues to consider

Since there is only one Earth and 6.3 billion humans (and many other species) live on it, it would be a good idea if we all lived in a sustainable way, because if we are to survive, we need to share resources fairly and sustainably.  You can work out if you are living sustainably by taking an ecological footprint test.  But don't stop there - why not conduct a full ethical and ecological audit?

Many people use the argument that there's no point doing anything to help save the environment because not enough other people are doing it, or because governments ought to do something, or whatever.  But every little helps.  And one person doing something can inspire others to do something.  And by a combination of ethical shopping, lobbying and campaigning, and taking steps to live more ethically and ecologically, we can make a difference.  For instance, if every household in the UK switched over to energy-saving lightbulbs, it would save enough energy to light the streets of every town in the UK.
